..."THE" Roxie Hart...
...OK, y'all, I just read that the Broadway run of Chicago will have a
new lead for Roxie Hart...ready? It's...Ashlee Simpson. A very
interesting choice - but she actually was in a 'Chicago' run in London a
bit back, so who knows - she might be pretty good with it.
But, somehow, I just don't see the pure 'Roxie Moxie' coming from Ms. Simpson... but hope to be proved wrong...
There have been quite a few actresses over the years take on this role, and honestly, haven't seen any, except for 'snippets' of the 2002 movie 'Chicago'...Renee Zellweger seems to make a pretty good Rox... but, for the record, the only Roxie Hart in this blogosphere is the one just below this text, y'all...
...yup, that's the only Roxie I know... ...sigh...

- I love Richard Gere, but I'm hesitant about seeing Chicago. I just can't imagine anyone else portraying Roxie half as well as Ginger did.
As for Ashlee Simpson... something is wrong with this picture. - Ooh, yeah...really didn't like Roxie's hair, but loved Ginger (as always). Renee did a marvelous job...you must see the film. And Liza deserves a mention for saving the original run after Gwen Verdon left.
- I actually saw Chicago first, because when it came out I wasn't a classic movies/Ginger fan. But I seriously loved Chicago. Ginger's Roxie and Renee's Roxie are very different from each other, hence incomparable, thus you should watch it Amanda.
Lauren - Great stuff, y'all...like I said, I am pretty much only familiar with Ginger's Roxie, and obviously pretty biased, but interested in learning about the other folks who have done the role, and hopefully catching a few play it...for example, I did not know Liza played Roxie...
I was CLOSE to mentioning the 'lip-sync' deal with Ashley Simpson, but just stopped short, lest there be any A.S. fans on board (although something tells me there really aren't...) - Oh, BTW... thanks to all for the birthday wishes for my daughter...she has had a pretty eventful birthday... had a field trip at school today, then went out with family for a nice dinner, and then back home for presents & cake!
And, a PS - About Roxie's hair...while definitely not the best style, nor anywhere near my "Top 5 Ginger hair styles" (possible future poll???), I kinda like it, if for nothing else it defines Roxie! It is definitely different from any hair style Ginger donned before or since... the big thing I don't like about it is the 'curly-Q' 'sideburn' deals...that kinda is a bit much. - I'm kind of fond of the hair, too. Although I HATE the style (I would seriously consider banging my head on a fence post multiple times before wearing that style for even one day), I love how it, as you say, Huey, "defines Roxie." As if the story and Ginger's performance weren't enough, "the hair" really makes the movie and character distinctive and impossible to forget.
- True, I won't forget that hair. But I do wonder why they didn't do a 20s style since it's supposed to take place in the 20s?
Lauren - Well, maybe this style was 'in' for the 20s...I always automatically think 'flapper' when you speak of 20's style... which typically is more 'straight-bang' stuff than curls, if I am not mistaken... but I am not a hair stylist (believe me, not even CLOSE)... maybe the curly-mussed style is a 'regional' thing - although I doubt the movie production folks would have gotten that 'precise' with it...it may just be that they wanted a 'different' look for Ginge, and came up with this one... it isn't all that bad, really...I've seen worse...and I'm not even a hair stylist...
As for Ashlee Simpson, that's difficult to wrap my head around. For some reason I can't imagine a pop star with a rocker style playing a murderer. But you're right; she may surprise!
